tado° Smart Thermostat's new "Energy IQ" app feature empowers users to control energy costs as a world first for the industry

Surprises from high heating costs are a thing of the past - tado°'s "Energy IQ" feature will empower full control to homeowners to set their monthly heating costs, and stick within budget thanks to intelligent heating and control.

London, 07 December 2021 - tado°, the European market leader for intelligent climate management, today launches its latest app feature named Energy IQ. With the new feature, tado° brings energy meter readings into its intelligent heating control systems, to control spending on heating consumption.

Today, the monthly heating bill is an unknown entity. Households receive their energy bill at the end of the month without any reference to their heating behaviour. In a time of rising energy prices the only way for households to lower their bills is to reduce their energy consumption. The smart meter rollout has covered millions of homes in the UK, but taking action to lower these bills is difficult without personalised data-driven recommendation whilst maintaining your comfort in the winter months. This is what Energy IQ from tado° is changing, giving users actionable steps, and a smarter way to manage their consumption and lower their costs.

After selected users were able to extensively test the new Energy IQ feature in beta over the past few months, the first version of Energy IQ is now available for all tado° Auto-Assist users with a metered heating system. The high engagement rate and the strong positive feedback highlight that controlling and managing your energy bills is a much desired feature for the UK household.

At launch, Energy IQ allows its users to have their exact heating costs and energy consumption displayed transparently at any time. Coming soon, Energy IQ will also allow users to make actionable changes such as setting temperatures and energy-saving functions down to the smallest details so that the level of heating costs matches a household’s budget and heating comfort level. In the tado° app, users can simply toggle on/off these energy-saving functions such as geofencing, Open Window Detection or Weather Adaptation to see for themselves the corresponding effects and savings they will have on their energy bill.

tado°'s Energy IQ feature is the world’s first solution to create a tangible link between heating behavior and actual energy costs. A user’s home temperature and tado°’s intelligent control features are partnered with data from analogue meters or smart meters, as well as linked with tado°’s intelligent algorithms. With the feature tado° users will never again have to worry about how high the monthly heating bill could be, as tado° shines a light onto the unknown and displays the projected costs at any time simply by checking the tado° app.

"Currently UK households have been heating their homes without fully understanding the impact on their monthly bill," said Christian Deilmann, co-founder and CPO at tado°. "Our new app feature "Energy IQ" will be the world's first solution where users can decide in advance how much they want to spend on heating costs in a month and make changes to adjust this cost."

The price of energy has risen significantly in the space of a year and many people in the UK are facing the most expensive winter ever when it comes to heating. It is more important than ever to manage heating costs actively and efficiently.

tado°’s smart thermostats and Energy IQ not only helps homes save money, but also reduce the carbon footprint of heating, which is more important than ever today in the current climate crisis.

The energy saving potential of smart thermostats is illustrated by the recently published study from Gemserv. The results of the study show that smart thermostats are the most cost-effective solution for saving both money and energy across all building types and measures. With an average heating bill of £744 for a typical 3 bedroom semi-detached home and expected to rise in 2022, integrating smart thermostats can save around £164 per year, while also saving a significant amount of CO2 emissions (561 kgCO2 equivalent annually)1. Should energy prices continue to rise as projected for 2022 when the energy tariff cap rises, the savings will be even greater.

The functions and availability of Energy IQ are constantly being developed by tado° and further updates to Energy IQ and Auto Assist will be rolled out via app update.
