Brits are battling scorching homes as indoor temperatures rise up to 48% higher than outdoors during summer

Brits may be cooler outside than inside their homes during periods of hot weather says tado°

3rd June 2026, London: As the UK prepares for another summer of rising temperatures, new data from tado° suggests many British homes could become significantly hotter indoors than outside.

According to anonymised temperature data from tado° smart thermostats collected across July and August 2025 - including both daytime and cooler nighttime temperatures - the average indoor temperature in UK homes reached 22.7°C, compared to an average outdoor temperature of 16.6°C.

This means UK homes were, on average, around 36% warmer indoors than outside across the summer months, with some regions experiencing even larger differences. In Scotland, indoor temperatures averaged nearly 48% warmer than outdoor temperatures, while London recorded the highest average indoor temperatures in the UK at 23.6°C throughout the summer.

The findings highlight how many UK homes trap and retain heat during warmer periods - despite often losing heat quickly during winter months.

“Many UK homes were not designed with prolonged summer heat in mind, meaning indoor temperatures can quickly become uncomfortable during warmer periods,” said Christian Deilmann. “As summers continue to get warmer,  indoor temperatures can stay surprisingly high well into the evening, even after outdoor temperatures begin cooling down. More households are looking for smarter ways to manage indoor temperatures and stay comfortable throughout the day and night.”

At the same time, a new UK survey commissioned by tado° found that most households still rely on traditional cooling habits rather than dedicated cooling systems or smart automation.

When asked what their first response to heat is:

  • 45% said they open windows
  • 33% close curtains
  • 10% use fans instead of air conditioning
  • Only 2% briefly switch air conditioning on before turning it off

Unlike many warmer countries, UK homes have not traditionally been built with fixed air conditioning systems, leading many households to rely on fans, portable AC units and manual cooling habits during hotter weather instead.

The tado° Smart AC Control allows users to control compatible air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps through the tado° app, automatically adjusting cooling based on room temperature, schedules and whether residents are home. The system can also pause cooling when open windows are detected to help avoid wasted energy.

As UK summers continue warming, connected cooling technology is becoming an increasingly important part of the smart home category.
