What is Multi-Room Control?
With Multi-Room Control, the temperature isn't controlled centrally for your whole home; instead, it's managed independently in each room. Most homes already have the necessary infrastructure: thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on each radiator sense the room temperature and reduce the heating once the desired temperature is reached.
Smart Multi-Room Control takes this a step further. The system heats proactively. You can set individual schedules for each room. Some devices can even learn your habits and stop heating the moment you leave the house. Every room gets the right temperature at exactly the right time. This saves a significant amount of energy and makes everyday life much more comfortable.
Multi-Room Control with tado°
Making your heating smart with tado° is straightforward. Multi-Room Control turns your boiler into a smart, connected system that offers much more than just basic temperature adjustment.
Room Link
Room Link is at the heart of the tado° Multi-Room Control system. This feature synchronises your Smart Thermostat, which controls the boiler, with all your Smart Radiator Thermostats in every room.
Here's how it works: each tado° device in your home can request heat independently. When a room requires warmth, the Smart Radiator Thermostat sends a signal to the smart thermostat connected to your boiler. The boiler then fires up, but only for as long as at least one room needs heat. This prevents your boiler from running unnecessarily once every room has reached its target temperature. At the same time, Room Link ensures that every room gets heat precisely when it needs it.
Room Link is included free with the tado° App.
Smart Schedules
With the tado° App, you can create bespoke heating schedules for each room. The app is intuitive: you can see all your rooms in one place and use a simple slider to adjust the temperature in each one, even when you're out.
Here's what that might look like in a typical home:
Bedroom: 17°C for a good night's sleep. Automatically warming up just before your alarm goes off.
Bathroom: Heating kicks in at 7am – perfectly timed for your morning shower.
Home office: A comfortable temperature during working hours, then automatic setback once you log off.
Kids' room: Little ones need it warmer. Teenagers are another matter – individual schedules can accommodate different routines.
Guest room: Frost protection when it's not in use. Heat it up via the app only when guests are actually coming to stay.
Smart Schedules are also free within the tado° App.
The problem with a single thermostat
Many homes rely on a single wall-mounted thermostat to control their entire heating system. As soon as it detects that the temperature has dropped in one location, it activates the boiler, which then distributes heat equally to every radiator in the house.
That creates several problems:
Wasted energy: Rooms that are rarely used – a spare bedroom, a storage room – get heated just the same as the ones you're actually in.
No regard for your routine: The bathroom needs warmth first thing in the morning. The bedroom needs it in the evening. The home office only during the day. A single thermostat simply can't accommodate these different demands.
No individual preferences: Some people like it warm; others prefer things cooler. A single thermostat forces the same temperature on everyone in the house.
External heat sources ignored: Sunshine through south-facing windows, heat from appliances, or a room full of people – a central thermostat can't react to any of these factors that affect room temperature.
Why Multi-Room Control is so useful
Smart Multi-Room Control solves these problems described above without a great deal of effort. The core advantages are:
Real energy savings: Heating only where and when it's needed – with Smart Thermostats in every room – reduces consumption meaningfully.
Maximum comfort: The bathroom is warm when you need it in the morning, the bedroom stays cool for sleeping, the living room heats up in the evening.
Individual preferences: Everyone can set their bedroom to their preferred temperature, completely independently of everyone else.
Responsive to temperature changes: Temperature is measured locally in each room. If the kitchen gets warm from afternoon sun, only that radiator dials back.
Targeted heating: The spare room stays at frost-protection level until guests actually arrive. Hallways and corridors get minimal heat.
Lower CO₂ emissions: Less energy consumed means a smaller carbon footprint – every degree counts.

How does Multi-Room Control actually work?
The same process occurs in every room: the thermostat measures the temperature and, if it is warmer or cooler than the target temperature, opens or closes the valve accordingly. This is based on an independent control loop in each room.
Measurement: A temperature sensor continuously reads the current room temperature. Modern digital sensors work to an accuracy of ±0.1°C.
Comparison: The controller compares the measured actual temperature against the target temperature. This can be set manually or adjusted automatically via a schedule.
Control: When there's a discrepancy, the controller signals the actuator. If the room is below the target, the valve opens and lets hot water circulate. Once the target is reached, the valve closes again.
Adaptation: The system responds dynamically to changes – when you open a window to air the room, when the sun is shining, or when you leave the house.
How can you control individual rooms?
There are three main options, each with different capabilities:
Mechanical TRV heads offer no automation and are often inaccurate (±2–3°C).
Digital thermostats allow precise temperature setting and programmable schedules.
Smart Thermostats – like those from tado° – connect with each other and your smartphone. They offer intelligent features like Geofencing and Adaptive Heating, and can be controlled individually from anywhere via the app.
Multi-Room Control with underfloor heating
Although underfloor heating offers exceptional comfort, it places particular demands on any room control system.
Unlike radiators, underfloor heating responds very slowly – what's known as thermal inertia. The heating pipes are embedded in a substantial screed floor, which acts as a large thermal store. Even after the valve closes, the floor continues to radiate heat for hours. Conversely, it takes a long time for a cool room to warm up again. This sluggishness makes it difficult to make spontaneous temperature changes, and conventional thermostats often struggle to keep up.
Modern smart underfloor heating systems work predictively to account for this. Rather than simply switching on and off, modern or smart thermostats modulate the heat input gradually. They start warming the room early enough to reach the target temperature in time. Self-learning algorithms, like those in tado°, analyse each room's warm-up behaviour. Within a few days, the system knows exactly how much lead time is needed. This means your bathroom floor will be perfectly warm for your morning routine, with no overheating and no guesswork.
Is Multi-Room Control worth it with a heat pump?
Multi-Room Control and heat pumps are an excellent combination, but there are a few things to bear in mind.
A heat pump delivers heating energy at a consistent temperature. The flow temperature is set centrally within the heat pump controls and remains stable. Multi-Room Control does not alter this flow temperature; instead, it optimises heat demand by selectively opening and closing thermostats or zone valves in each room.
The benefit is clear: the heat pump responds to the overall heat demand across the home and adjusts its output accordingly. By heating only where it's needed, electricity consumption drops measurably. Since heat pumps are designed for steady, continuous operation, Multi-Room Control actively promotes the efficient use of the energy they produce.
One important note: a proper hydraulic balancing of your system is a prerequisite for Multi-Room Control to work efficiently alongside a heat pump. Hydraulic balancing ensures that every radiator and heating circuit receives the exact volume of water it needs – no more, no less.
