tado° Multi-Zone Control lets you manage each heating zone in your home independently through a single app. Simply replace your existing wall thermostats with a tado° Smart Thermostat X (wired or wireless). Each zone gets its own Smart Schedule, remote control, and energy-saving automations, so you only heat the areas that actually need it.

It’s easy to use tado° across multiple heating zones. You can control your existing zones smartly and individually using your smartphone. Simply replace each of your original wall thermostats with tado°. No need for a professional installer.
What are heating zones and “zoning”?
Many houses (especially in the UK) use a multi zone heating system. Typically, there are two zones, such as the ground floor and the first floor. Each zone has its own wall thermostat, which measures and controls the temperature for that floor. The thermostat controls a heating zone valve. The valve opens or closes the hot water flow to that zone. This zoned heating system allows you to heat different areas independently – meaning you’ll only send heat where it is actually needed.
Why traditional zoning has its limitations
Standard thermostats can be used to control zones. However, manual thermostats are now considered outdated. You have to adjust each zone right there at the wall. There’s no app or central overview, and without dynamic schedules, you’ll still be wasting energy.
Problems with traditional thermostats:
Adjustments must be made manually at the thermostat
No central system overview
No mobile app control
No schedules incorporating multi zone heating controls
No control when you’re away from home
Multi-Zone Control with tado°
Switching to tado° is very simple. You don’t need to move any pipes or knock down any walls. You’re simply making your existing system smart by replacing your old devices one for one.
Wired thermostat: Replace it with the Smart Thermostat X.
Wireless thermostat: Replace the receiver at the boiler with the Wireless Receiver X. Use the Wireless Temperature Sensor X as the room controller.
Benefits of tado° Multi-Zone Control
Control all heating zones from one app
Individual Smart Schedule for each zone
Remote control from anywhere using your smartphone
Smart and energy-efficient heating
You can still control your heating manually from the device (e.g. Boost Heating function)
Let’s look at heating systems in detail to understand how they work. Your heating system has three main components:
The boiler: It generates heat for your heating and hot water.
The heating zone: Your wall thermostat controls a zone valve, which allows hot water to flow into a zone.
The radiators: This is where the required heat arrives.
Which tado° setup do I need for Multi-Zone Control?
Scenario 1: Two or more heating zones
Your home has two or more zones, for example the ground floor and the first floor. Each floor is controlled by its own wall thermostat, which might be wired or wireless.
Wired system: Replace each thermostat one for one with a Smart Thermostat X. Assign each device the "Zone Controller" role through the app.
Wireless system: Replace your current receiver with a Wireless Receiver X. Place one Wireless Temperature Sensor X in each zone. Assign them the "Zone Controller" role through the app.
Scenario 2: One heating zone
One single heating circuit controls your entire house.
Wired system: Replace the wall thermostat with a Smart Thermostat X. Set its role to "Zone Controller" through the tado° app. It now controls the heating circuit.
Wireless system: Use a Wireless Temperature Sensor X as your central thermostat. Replace the old receiver with a Wireless Receiver X. Set it as the "Zone Controller"
Scenario 3: Independent rooms
Sometimes a room is not supposed to activate the central boiler. This is the case when there are separate circuits for underfloor heating and radiators.
Through the app, select the role "No Zone Controller" for that room.
The room then operates independently and does not request heat from a central heating circuit.
Want even more comfort? Upgrade to Multi-Room Control
Are you looking to save even more energy and further boost your comfort? With Smart Radiator Thermostats in every room, you can convert your Multi-Zone setup into Multi-Room setup. This means a completely individualised room control system. Thanks to Room Link, all your tado° devices coordinate intelligently. This allows you to control each room individually. The result: optimal heat distribution, zero waste and maximum comfort.
What is a Zone Controller? Which device should I buy?
There is no specific device called a "Zone Controller." It is a role you assign to a Smart Thermostat X or a Wireless Receiver X using the app. Up to 10 rooms can communicate with one Zone Controller.
Can I mix different heating types (e.g., underfloor heating and radiators)?
Yes. Underfloor heating and radiators often work as separate circuits. You can set rooms to work independently by selecting "No Zone Controller" through the app.
Do I need a separate Wireless Receiver for each room?
No. The Wireless Receiver X is usually the central link to the boiler. All the sensors in the house will connect to this one receiver. You only need multiple controls if you have physically separate circuits with their own valves.
Does tado° Multi-Zone Control work with underfloor heating?
Yes. tado° integrates underfloor heating into a multi-zone system. Simply replace your existing wall thermostat with a tado° thermostat. You can use the app to set whether this room runs as a separate zone or is linked to other rooms. Important: If you have a wired system, you do not need a wireless receiver.
