tado° and Panasonic launch first joint development

AQUAREA Sync and Hydraulic Balancing cut heating costs, extend heat pump lifespan and unlock subsidies without any plumbing required

Munich, 5 September 2025: Today tado°, Europe’s leader in home energy management, and global technology company Panasonic launched two new smart features to make heat pumps cheaper to run, longer-lasting and easier to install - all without needing costly or messy plumbing work.

AQUAREA Sync and Hydraulic Balancing features are the first to come from a joint development between the two companies. 

The features, available to Panasonic AQUAREA customers starting today (Hydraulic Balancing from November), will deliver:

• Lower heating bills: tado° users already save an average of 22% on their bills. Panasonic customers can now save even more.
• No more cold spots: dynamic room-by-room boosts keep every corner of your home comfortable.
• Longer heat pump lifespan: fewer stop–start cycles reduce strain on the system.
• Subsidy access without plumbing: meet legal requirements in countries like Germany with no valve replacements, no mess and at a cheaper rate.

More than 25 million heat pumps are already installed in Europe and millions more are expected as energy prices rise and households look to cut costs and reduce their emissions. (1)

What’s New In More Detail?

While tado°’s Heat Pump Optimizer X also works with heat pumps from many other manufacturers, the partnership with Panasonic enables a deeper level of integration.Through deeper collaboration and shared technical access, the new features push performance even further for tado° and Panasonic customers.

1. AQUAREA Sync: Exclusive Efficiency Gains for Panasonic Heat Pumps (Now available across Europe)

Tado°, in collaboration with Panasonic, has developed AQUAREA Sync - an exclusive optimisation feature available only for Panasonic’s AQUAREA heat pumps.

With AQUAREA Sync, Panasonic heat pumps can now:

• Further reduce flow temperatures to increase efficiency by 10%
• Avoid short cycling by entering true standby, reducing energy waste and extending the heat pump’s lifespan
• Dynamically boost power to underperforming rooms to maintain comfort

These actions are performed automatically based on insights from real-time communication between tado’s Heat Pump Optimiser X and its room thermostats, giving users effortless efficiency without compromising comfort.

2. Hydraulic Balancing: Smart, Simple, Subsidy-Ready (Coming November 2025)

In Germany and other European countries, hydraulic balancing is mandatory to access government subsidies for heat pump installations. Traditionally, achieving this involves replacing radiator valves. This is a time-intensive process that can be costly.

tado°’s upcoming certified hydraulic balancing feature offers a smarter and more accessible alternative:

• No need to replace valves
• Simply fit tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats onto existing valves which takes minutes to fit and is cheaper than changing the valves. 
• Certified compliance to unlock subsidies without plumbing work exclusively for Panasonic customers

Full compatibility and certification is given after the installation for Panasonic heat pump customers, meaning that homeowners meet legal subsidy requirements faster, cheaper and with no plumbing required. 

tado° Heat Pump Optimizer X customers who have a heat pump by other manufacturers can also use this feature to achieve hydraulic balancing; however, they will not receive the certification directly from tado°.

  • It is available for existing tado° and Panasonic AQUAREA bundle customers and this feature will be activated automatically. 
  • Cost: AQUAREA Sync is included free of charge for all tado° ​​Heat Pump Optimiser X's connected to a Panasonic heat pump.
• Hydraulic Balancing: 
  
  • Hydraulic Balancing will be available from November 2025

• Available to all customers with tado° X devices

• Automatic hydraulic balancing will be free of charge for all tado° ​​Heat Pump Optimiser X's connected to a Panasonic AQUAREA heat pump. For all other customers, this feature will be available via tado°’s Auto Assist subscription (3,99 Euro / month)

How tado° ’s Heat Pump Optimizer X works

Launched in 2024, the tado° Heat Pump Optimizer X is the core device behind these new smart features. It works with the home’s main heat pump controller to manage heating and hot water through the tado° app - including smart schedules and remote temperature control.

Paired with tado° Smart Thermostats X or Smart Radiator Thermostats X, it also enables individual room control, making it easy to heat only the spaces you’re using. This feature remains unique to tado° in homes with heat pumps.

For households on dynamic energy tariffs, it can automatically shift heating and hot water usage to times when electricity is cheapest. It’s already compatible with leading European heat pump brands.

Innovating Together: A New Chapter In tado° and Panasonic’s Partnership 

In 2024, tado° and Panasonic announced a strategic partnership and launched the first smart heat pump bundle of its kind – combining Panasonic’s AQUAREA heat pumps with tado°’s Smart Thermostats and Heat Pump Optimizer X. The bundle enables homeowners to manage heating room by room - through the tado° app and helps households gain full visibility and control over room temperatures, heating behaviour and energy usage. Today’s announcement builds on that success. tado° and Panasonic have levelled up their partnership moving from combining their products to innovation.
